Students will be involved in projects and performances that celebrate British Culture. Under the themes of Democracy and Diversity we will look at what makes our culture unique. The week ends with a Diamond Jubilee Tea Dance in Wray Crescent Park with local senior citizens!

• 92% of IAMS pupils attaining 5 GCSEs including English & Maths progressed to an A Level or equivalent course (2^nd highest of all 10 Islington secondary schools, the borough average 88%).

IAMS is currently taking part in the exhibition, EYE 5 at Islington Museum. This is a brilliant show which brings together 5 schools and colleges in the Islington Borough and showcases 10 students from IAMS: Hana Abubakar, Dilara Bektas, Tiago De Freitas, Jonathan De Oliveira Peixoto, Sean Garrett Page, Jamain Gordon, Jamal James, Hana Mohamed, Samira Mohamed and Soma Rasheed.

The exhibition opened on Thursday 8^th March and the gallery was packed with visitors including the Lord Mayor of Islington who gave a speech to open the exhibition. A number of IAMS students were also there to take well deserved plaudits for some really excellent work.

The exhibition itself had been curated by a student from each of the schools and colleges involved and in collaboration with Cubbitt Gallery. Representing IAMS was Ylynn Crowstaff who helped make a really coherent show, which was no mean feat considering the large amount of students and variety of work involved!

This is a really great show that showcases really impressive work at a standard all students from IAMS should be proud of.

English teacher Joanna Smith, dressed as Miss Havisham from Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, teaches year 11 students.

Spinster Miss Havisham taught a group of Year 11 students as a school marked the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’ birth.

English teacher Joanna Smith dressed up and played the character from the novel Great Expectations at Islington Arts and Media School in Turle Road, Finsbury Park, during a celebration of the 19th-century writer’s life and work.

Other teachers dressed as the Artful Dodger, Bill Sikes and Mr Bumble were also to be found prowling through the classrooms.

Ashley Grey, the school’s community arts co-ordinator, said: “We wanted to teach the students about Dickens the campaigner as well as Dickens the writer.”

At the age of 12 Dickens was forced to work 10-hour shifts in a shoe polish warehouse when his father was sent to a debtors’ prison.

The conditions under which children worked and lived were a theme of his writing throughout his career.
