As part of the Gifted and Talented programme at IAMS, ten of our students from year 9 and ten students from year 10, were selected by Jelka Vukovic (Gifted and Co- coordinator) to participate in a two weeks Public Speaking Workshops, which started on Wednesday 16 November 2005.
The workshop was organised and facilitated by an organisation called “Speakers Bank” and was titled “Find your Voice… Find a Job!”
It was designed to develop their public speaking skills and to overcome one of the greatest fears that people have. The students had an opportunity to work in groups as well as individually and to take part in different activities and to present their own writings on varies issues that they choose and felt strongly about it. At the end they were awarded a special “ISLINGTON Chamber of Commerce Certificates of Achievement” for taking an active part and completing the workshops.
"Gifted" pupils excel in academic subjects such as Maths, English, Science or Information Technology, whereas "Talented" pupils are those that have special ability in Art, Music, Drama, Physical Education and Dance. Students identified do not necessarily demonstrate high attainment but have the potential to achieve well.
There has been a lot of discussion about the terms "gifted" and "talented" and whether these are the most appropriate to use. Some colleagues prefer to use the term "able" and therefore students that are identified in a school's cohort may be referred to as able, gifted or talented
